I. Nakhla is an artist, musician, and educator. Through sound, music, performance, and installation they build sonic worlds. Attuned to the sonic as place-maker, their practice figures the sonic as a site of the counter-archive, insisting on active pasts and urgent presences. Listening to environment – and how it remembers – Nakhla’s work prompts questions about what we consider to be space, place, and exhibition, making mischief with categories, rhythms and keys. Collaboration and community participation are key to how they search for inclusive and ongoing sonic ecologies.
Nakhla has had work commissioned for The Southbank Centre, London, ARC, Stockton, IMT Gallery, London, NTS Radio and many more. Nakhla works as a composer and producer on art films and video games. Their score for Yuli Serfaty’s ‘Hunter, Killer, Father, Lover’, has been screened at Xxijra Hii Gallery, London, Art-o-rama, Marseille, 2024, Festival L’Académie des Mutantes at Capc, Musée d’art Contemporain, Bordeaux, curated by Cedric Fauq, and added to the Lafayette Anticipations collection, 2024.
Nakhla works as a lecturer at Camberwell College of Art, UAL (BA Sculpture) and Northampton University (BA Fine Art). They release music under the moniker end measure Spotify – Bandcamp and are a part of Trans-Feminist collective in-grid.
